Hair transplant is one of the common types of plastic surgery transplant. It is the transfer of hair follicles taken from body parts such as chest, legs and arms that are resistant to baldness, especially from the back of the head near the neck, to the area where the hair is lost.
Hair follicles located at the back of the head (on the nape) are more preferred in hair transplantation. In men, the hair follicles on the back of the neck fall out less because they are insensitive to the hormone DHT (dihydro testosterone).
Hair follicles taken from other parts of the body, on the other hand, do not have the same feature and may fall out again after hair transplantation.
However, there is no area with non-shedding feature in women. For this reason, the success of hair transplantation in women is less than in men. Since the transplanted hair will also be affected by the hereditary (genetic) structure, it should be known that it might fall out over time.
Hair Transplantation Techniques
Follicular unit extraction (FUE)
Follicular unit transplantation (FUT)
Follicular unit extraction (FUE)
With FUE harvesting, individual follicular units containing 1 to 4 hairs are taken under local anesthesia; this micro removal process typically uses small punches 0.6 mm and 1.0 mm in diameter. The surgeon then uses very small microblades or fine needles to puncture sites to retrieve the grafts, place them at a predetermined density and pattern, and consistently open the scars to create a realistic hair pattern. Technicians usually do the final part of the procedure by placing individual grafts in place.
Direct Hair Implantation (DHI)
DHI hair transplantation method is the process of placing the hair follicles collected one by one from the patient in the transplantation area with the help of the implanter pen. The most obvious difference between FUE hair transplantation method and DHI hair transplantation is that it can be done without shaving. The procedure, which can be done in 2 steps in FUE technique can be done in 1 step with DHI.
Sapphire FUE Technique
While Sapphire is a quality stone known for its hardness, durability and brightness, this is the FUE technique where sapphire blades is used. With sapphire, small and thin channels are opened very well, the grafts won’t have much contact with the external side, has minimal risk for tissue damage, and recovery process is shorter.
Follicular unit transplantation (FUT)
The surgeon harvests a strip of skin from the posterior scalp, in an area of good hair growth. A single-, double-, or triple-bladed scalpel is used to remove strips of hair-bearing tissue from the donor site. Each incision is planned so that intact hair follicles are removed. The excised strip is about 1–1.5 x 15–30 cm in size. While closing the resulting wound, assistants begin to dissect individual follicular unit grafts, which are small, naturally formed groupings of hair follicles, from the strip. Working with binocular Stereo-microscopes, they carefully remove excess fibrous and fatty tissue while trying to avoid damage to the follicular cells that will be used for grafting.
General FAQs
1.Who can have a hair transplant?
People who have thinning or shedding of their hair due to genetic reasons, hormonal problems, stress, environmental factors, and accidents can have their hair transplanted. The person who will have a hair transplant operation must have the number of grafts required for transplantation.
2.How many hair follicles can be transplanted in one session?
Even if you have unlimited hair follicles in each hair transplant session, unlimited grafts cannot be transplanted. A maximum of 6000 grafts (12.000-18,000 hairs) can be transplanted in each session. The ideal is not to exceed 5000 - 5500 grafts. Because there is a risk of necrosis in excess.
3.Is hair transplantation a painful process?
Since anesthesia will be applied during the procedure, pain is not felt. However, there may be headaches from the procedure, albeit rare. This is perfectly normal and expected. In the following days, the patient enters the healing process quickly and pain is not felt.
4.How long does the hair transplant operation take?
A hair transplant procedure can take between 8-14 hours, depending on the number of grafts to be transplanted, the technique to be used and the complexity of the surgery. It is preferable to start the operation early in the day, since it is generally a long operation.
5.When does the transplanted hair come out?
Approximately 60-70% of the transplanted hair falls out within a month. We refer to this as the shock shedding term. Our goal is to transplant hair follicles, not hair strands. The transplanted hair follicles start to grow from the third month. The best results are achieved in 6-12 months.
